The field of therapeutic recreation continues to evolve in very progressive ways. This volume contains a variety of important conceptual and spiritual studies to understanding the preparation , organization, and practice of recreational therapy. Considering the long-standing criticism of the atheoretical nature of therapeutic recreation research, we are quite excited about including various manuscripts that embraced theory-driven approaches in therapeutic recreation practice.

Volume XVII of the Annual in Therapeutic Recreation includes a broad range of contributions from instrument validation to mining national datasets to surveying professionals in the field. This annual includes a new addition of protocols important to the profession of therapeutic recration which we hope will be expanded over the coming years.

This volume has a varied selection of thirteen manuscripts and one protocol.  They represent a wide range of therapeutic recreation services, from sociable tandem cycle to smoking cessation to intergenerational programming.  Many of the articles focus on adults with physical disabilities; there are also articles addressing the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities and individuals with mental health issues as well as older adults.  As with previous annuals, the range of methods covers a broad spectrum from experimental design to qualitative interviews.

ATRA's Annual in Therapeutic Recreation offers a diverse set of stimulating articles that span the scholarly continuum from research to professional practice. Articles focusing on research include the use of therapeutic modalities, comparison of individuals with differing abilities, and use of coping strategies among people with AIDS. Professional practice articles include health promotion interventions, efficacy of sensory stimulation, a multicultural critique of service models and quality and process improvement strategies.

Over five million people in the United States are moderately to severely impaired by a dementia related illness such as Alzheimer's disease. They may not recognize family members, depend on others for help with daily activities, may be lethargic and unable to communicate their needs, and have distressing numbers of behavioral problems that lead to the prescription of powerful psychoactive medications. Despite the prevalent thinking that these disturbing behaviors are the result of unmet needs and environmental pressures, a methodical system has not been designed to help recreational therapists address these problems in a consistent way. This guideline was created to provide a reliable approach to positive behavior change in dementia care settings, based on the most current research evidence. Specifically, this is an evidence-based practice guide for disturbing behaviors of dementia for the practicing geriatric recreational therapist in all care settings. 316 pages (2008), spiralbound
